The Kogogu-tsunegoten is the palace where the Empress resided. Since its construction during the Hoei era, it has been located in the northern section of the grounds. During the Edo period, a Kogo (Empress) and a Nyogo (Imperial Secondary Consort) never co-existed. Since the Nyogo held a status almost equivalent to the Empress, she would reside in the Kogogu-tsunegoten, which in that case was called the Nyogo Palace. When a Nyogo received treatment as a Jun-sangu (a status equivalent to the three Empresses: Empress, Empress Dowager, and Grand Empress Dowager), the palace was called the Jun-go Palace.
