The Seiryoden, originating from the Heian Palace, became established as the Emperor's daily residence from the late 9th century. Along with the Shishinden, the main hall of the palace, it has been the stage for important traditional court ceremonies. Following the reconstruction of the palace by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590, a new residence for the Emperor, the Otsunegoten, was established, and the Seiryoden was used exclusively for ceremonies.
