The Rin-untei (lit. neighboring clouds) teahouse in the Upper Villa is, as its name suggests, located at the highest elevation in the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, featuring the best view of the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. The Rin-untei teahouse existed even before the full-scale construction of the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. It was burnt down in 1678, and rebuilt in the following year and was used by Emperor Emeritus Reigen. However, it was again destroyed, and the existing buildings were rebuilt in 1824 on the occasion of Emperor Emeritus Kokaku's imperial visit.
