The Rin-untei (literally “neighboring clouds”) building in the Upper Villa is, as its name suggests, situated at the highest elevation within the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, offering the most commanding view of the entire estate. The Rin-untei predates the full-scale construction of the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. It was destroyed by fire in 1678, rebuilt the following year, and later used by Emperor Emeritus Reigen. However, it was again lost and reconstructed in 1824 to accommodate the imperial visit of Emperor Emeritus Kōkaku.
