On the western shore of the South Pond at the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace stands a stone bridge called Yatsuhashi (literally, "Eight-Plank Bridge"), which leads to the central island. The name Yatsuhashi refers to a type of bridge constructed by connecting several planks (of wood or stone) at alternating angles, forming a distinctive zigzag pattern. This design is said to have been inspired by the Yatsuhashi in Mikawa Province, famously featured in The Tales of Ise (Ise Monogatari).
