The three rooms facing south are Jodan-no-ma (upper floor level room), Chudan-no-ma (middle floor level room), and Gedan-no-ma (lower floor level room). These rooms were used for ceremonies and gatherings such as the New Year Greeting Ceremony and Seasonal Banquets. Jodan-no-ma is the highest-ranked room, featuring a raised floor where the Emperor was seated. It is furnished with the Chodai-gamae (an ornamental doorway giving access to the Kenji-no-ma room where the Imperial Regalia were placed) behind the Emperor's seat.
