The Shin-goten (literally, New Palace) is a palace built at the Katsura Imperial Villa to welcome Emperor Gomizunoo by Prince Toshitada. Construction began around 1662 (Kanbun 2). The building highlights intricately designed fittings: transom and fusuma handles in the shape of the kanji character for "tsuki (moon)”, handles shaped like a seasonal flower basket, built-in shelves made from eighteen types of precious wood, and nail-covers shaped like a daffodil. These fittings can be found in the Shin-goten and the Gakki-no-ma room.
