At the Shishinden, various important imperial ceremonies and rituals were held, including the Enthronement Ceremony, Coming-of-Age Ceremonies for the Emperor and Crown Prince, the Investiture Ceremony for a new Empress and Crown Prince, and seasonal court banquets. Not only the main building but also the south courtyard in front of it, the surrounding corridor, and the various gates were used as part of the ceremonial space. In the south courtyard, the Daijōkyū was temporarily constructed, and the Daijōsai ceremony was conducted there by the Emperor.
