Tenjo-no-ma

The Tenjō-no-ma, also known simply as Tenjō, was a room located in the southern section of the Seiryōden, extending from east to west. Its southern side was open to the outside. In principle, only individuals of the fifth court rank or higher were permitted to enter this space within the Seiryōden. As a result, nobles of the fourth or fifth rank who were granted this privilege were referred to as Tenjōbito, meaning “court nobles granted access to the Seiryōden”.
