When King Wu Ding of the Shang Dynasty earnestly wished for peace and stability in his realm, he received a divine message in a dream. In the dream, he was told that a wise man who would greatly assist him would appear. Wu Ding had an image of the sage from his dream drawn and ordered a search throughout the country. Eventually, a man who closely resembled the figure in the dream was found. He was appointed as prime minister and proved to be an excellent advisor. With his support, Wu Ding became one of the great rulers of the Shang Dynasty. This painting depicts that historical episode.
