The displayed sliding doors decorate the west side of the Ni-no-ma room of the Kyakuden pavilion. The painting depicts a spring scenery of Hase-dera temple in Nara prefecture. The main hall with its high soaring stage, the three-storied pagoda, and the distant mountains are painted with cherry blossoms in full bloom. The temple’s statue of eleven-headed Kannon has been revered since ancient times. It is said that the roofed ascending corridor represents a long penance which was to be rewarded with Kannon’s greater blessings.
