When we speak of shōji today, we usually mean translucent, paper-covered sliding doors that diffuse light. However, the term originally referred to a broader range of partitions, including folding screens (tsuitate) and sliding doors (fusuma). At the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the Kenjō Shōji in the Shishinden and the Araumi Shōji in the Seiryōden are examples of shōji in the form of fusuma.
