From around 1641 (Kanei 18), Prince Toshitada, the second head of the Hachijo-no-miya Imperial family, began the restoration of the Katsura Imperial Villa, where he had once visited with his father, Prince Toshihito. He restored the Shoin building established by Prince Toshihito and extended it to accommodate long-term stays and receiving several guests. The extended building is this Chushoin building. The roof is the Kokerabuki (wooden shingled roof) with a gentle upward convex curve in the middle. This roof design is also adapted in the Koshoin, the Gakki-no-ma, and Shin-goten.
